Piroplasmosis is a parasitic disease that can affect horses, and it’s essential for buyers to be informed about this condition, especially if they are considering exporting their future equine companion.

Is Caused by protozoa of the genus babesia, the most common species being Babesia caballi and Theileria equi. This disease primarily affects horses but can also impact other equines such as donkeys and mules.

The Horses that want to be exported to countries outside Europe (Mexico, USA...) need to perform Piro test at least 3 weeks before their trip, and be negative in piro to be able to travel.

We always recommend that, before the vet check, the buyer should perform the piroplasmosis test if the horse has not undergone this test previously.

Key Aspects to Consider:

1.Transmissions: Piroplasmosis is mainly transmitted through ticks. It can also occur through blood transfusions or by using contaminated instruments.

2. Clinical signs -
- High fever.
- Anemia (paleness of the mucous membranes).
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes).
- Lethargy or general weakness.
- Dark urine (due to hemoglobin).

* Notesome horses can test positive for piroplasmosis (meaning they have the parasite in their system) and show no obvious symptoms. This is known as being "asymptomatic." These horses can carry on with their normal lives

3Cost of the Test: The test for detecting piroplasmosis (piro test) typically costs around 100 to 200 euros, depending on the laboratory and location, We recommend conducting the test through BOSE (Biología y Salud Animal) . The laboratory usually takes between 3 to 7 days to provide test results, allowing for proper planning for the purchase and transport of the horse.

4. Requirements for Traveling Outside Europe: It is crucial that horses are negative for piroplasmosis to travel outside of Europe.

5.Treatment for Positive Horses: If a horse tests positive, there are effective treatments available. The cost to treat a positive horse can vary, but it generally ranges from 300 to 800 euros, depending on the treatment and veterinary care required.

6.Test costs and results: the test cost is between 100/200€ depending on the laboratory and the region. The results of the test typically take about 24 to 72 hours to be available, depending on the laboratory, We recommend the "Bose" laboratory because it provides reliable and prompt service, ensuring that results are available in time to meet export requirements.

7. Conclusion: Piroplasmosis should not be a cause for alarm, but being informed and prepared is crucial. Make sure to conduct necessary tests and consult with a veterinarian about the health status of the horse you are considering.
